I'm curious about what you can do besides academics at Brown University. Are there any clubs that you can join with no prior experience and how much free time should you leave for yourself to do homework and relax?

How is Brown?

I've read some posts about life at Brown but nothing really recent. I am an Asian Indian and am vegetarian. Also, I don't really see myself drinking underage or using substances. Can I get some current or just graduated students' opinions on Brown including some of these factors: I heard that alcohol/substance usage is a given. Are students who do not participate excluded in any way? I understand that there is a niche for everyone, but honestly, will such a student have trouble making friends. As a vegetarian, is it easy to get sufficient food and will any specific meal plan fit my needs better than another? I've heard a lot about self-segregation, meaning races will inevitably seclude themselves from other races. Is this even a real thing and is it as bad as people say? Are dorms really bad? Also if you have a list of cons of attending Brown, that would be appreciated. I'm considering Brown, Duke, and Rice but Brown is the obvious best for applied mathematics so it's my first choice. I just want to know what students feel is truly bad about Brown.

Taking a gap year?

Brown was my dream school and I was rejected RD. I truly cannot think of another place as perfect for me, and not necessarily because of the prestige - I didn't apply to any other Ivies because Brown has always been the school I saw myself at. I was accepted to some good schools, but am not excited about any of them. I know people say you will love wherever you end up, but I am hung up my dream and what I believe is the right place for me. I considered starting at one of my other schools, working hard, and trying to transfer, but am now considering another option.. Since I am also unsure about what I want to study and feeling very lost in general, I am considering taking a gap year and volunteering with the Americorps program for 10 months. I have heard nothing but good things about this program - how rewarding the work is, as well as how much you learn about yourself and the world. I would then re-apply to Brown ED this coming fall. Having just started the program at this point, I do not know how much of it I could include in my application (i.e., unsure if a program leader could write me a letter of rec having not known me very long, or if I could write a good essay about it in these beginning stages - but I would definitely include it on my resumé and explain my circumstances as a non-traditional applicant in the additional information section). To give some background I have a 4.16 GPA that I hope to maintain or improve with this final semester of high school, 35 ACT, significant ECs/leadership including starting some of my own things, National Merit Finalist. Most selective school I was accepted to was Northwestern. I've read that re-applying to a school you got rejected from as a first year student again (as opposed to as a transfer) is unwise bc your grades/scores won't have changed so you will probably get rejected again...but since Ivies are such a lottery and many academically qualified students get rejected, I am wondering if my situation is different. Not to say I would definitely be accepted, but would I have a better chance? Especially applying ED this time since the acceptance rate is 22% as opposed to around 8? (Although I know the ED pool is generally stronger so it isn't necessarily a boost). Would Brown seeing me apply a second time demonstrate my dedication and help me, or they'd see someone that they rejected applied again without taking college courses somewhere else, and be an almost automatic rejection? I also want to note I wouldn't be taking a gap year solely to try and "beef up" my resumé for Brown. I truly believe it would be good for me to get a year away from school, do some good for the world, and seek clarity about myself and my aspirations. I would love to hear speculation from everyone but also if anyone has sought a similar route or knows someone who has, I would really like to know how it turned out for you. Thanks!

Current Brown students (or Brown parents), how are you enjoying your time at Brown? Any misconceptions? Anything you wish you would have known? Were there colleges you chose Brown over and why was that? Any advice specific to life at Brown? I have tried to find similar threads as these but they seem a little outdated. I would greatly appreciate anything that can be contributed to the conversation.

Brown vs. JHU

Hello! I first want to start off by saying thanks for taking the time to read this post. So now that I've heard back from all my schools in terms of where I've been accepted, it's finally time for me to make a decision on where I want to go. I've been accepted to 9 schools and I've narrowed it down to two: Johns Hopkins and Brown. I really like the fact that both of these schools have a pretty open curriculum, which is a good asset considering I hope to double major. In terms of cost, both of them are almost the same (literally there is only a couple of hundred dollars separating them). I live in Virginia, so Maryland is really close compared to Rhode Island, but I don't mind being that far away from home. But of course, the most important thing is academics. I definitely plan on majoring in Neuroscience, and hopefully double majoring with Public Health as well, and I also plan to go on a pre-med track. I know that Johns Hopkins has a great science program in general and lots of research. But, I'm a little concerned about the environment. I know that the whole "Hopkins is really competitive" stereotype might be overplayed, but it's hard to not keep that in your mind. On the other hand, Brown is said to be more "laid back," but I'm wondering how much of that is a stereotype too, considering that it's pretty selective in the first place. Anyways, I'm not even sure if I'm making any coherent sense, but I would love to hear anyone's thoughts on the issue. Thanks again!

How hard is it to make friends here?

Hey, so I was just accepted RD and I'm extremely excited for ADOCH and all and I heard how Brown is super open and friendly place for anyone, but many people say that it can be quite clique-y which is personally intimidating because I want to be able to fit in. I'm not the most social of people, I'd say I'm probably an introvert (never really looked into that) so I wouldn't be that person who just walked up to someone to say hi or someone who can easily make friends. I'm scared I won't make friends when I officially attend this september and was wondering if it is common for people like me who want to have a good time and want to be social (but suck at it lol) to have that changed when they go to college, specifically Brown and their social lives end up becoming pretty good.

I've seen multiple threads on this already but I wanted some opinions specific to my situation. I plan on studying computer science/ engineering but want to keep my options open for Economics or Mathematics as well. With respect to computer science and engineering, I would appreciate your thoughts on- 1. The quality of research conducted (primary research topics) and access to this research 2. Hacking/ technology entrepreneurship culture outside mainstream academics 3. Undergraduate experience/ social atmosphere/ being in Providence vs New York vs Ithaca

Help with Brown University Financial Aid

Hi all, I am a senior from Evergreen Valley High School in San Jose, CA. I was accepted to Brown University for computer science, and I would really like to go there; however, the Brown financial aid office said they cannot give me my financial aid package without the 2015 federal tax return from my mom. Due to issues with the IRS, my mom is unable to have her 2015 federal tax return available for at least the next few months. I have submitted an official tax-delay form to Brown University, but they still insist that the university cannot determine my financial aid eligiblity without the tax return. I'm unsure what to do since the SIR deadline of May 1 is approaching and financial aid is a big concern for me regarding where to go to college. I have filled out both the FAFSA and CSS Profile, but it is not sufficient according to Brown. As of right now, my other top choices are UC Berkeley ($23k/yr after grants) and UCLA ($26k/yr after grants). If anyone could offer any insights/help on how to obtain a financial aid package from Brown, I would greatly appreciate it. Brown is my top choice due to its open curriculum, liberal student body, cooperative student culture, and location (I want to go to school on the east).

Brown vs Yale for Classics Major

Hi guys, I was somehow lucky enough to be admitted to both Brown and Yale, and now I need to make a decision. I plan on majoring in Classics (Latin and Greek), so for anyone familiar with either department, which could you recommend for undergraduate study and why? My other question is about prestige; I know it is somewhat pretentious and superficial, but it is honestly a concern of mine, so I'd appreciate if you'd answer truthfully. Okay so I know Yale has a slight edge, but what I'm wondering, how significant is this disparity in prestige? I know when you tell people you go to Yale, their reaction will indicate how impressed they are. Do you also get his for Brown? to an equal or to a lesser extent? Will people respect my going to Brown as much as they would to Yale? Some of you may be inclined to answer about personal fit; while Brown has the definite edge, and I think I'd be happier there, I'd prefer if you'd answer just these two questions above. Thanks!
