Tip for Future Applicants

If anybody is planning on 1) applying to Brown regular decision and 2) eligible for need-based financial aid, then I can't recommend applying to the University of Pennsylvania strongly enough. Even if you don't have any interest, because if I had not done a Penn app I wouldn't be going to Brown next year. Why? Brown compares, and oftentimes matches financial aid offers from other Ivy-caliber schools. Penn has a no loan policy in their financial aid packages (Brown will require you to take out loans) and the estimated family contribution is usually calculated lower. I was accepted into both schools, so my Penn app was essentially just a $12,000 per year scholarship application to Brown. They matched my Penn financial aid offer ($12,000 less) and even undercut them by about $1,000 per year. My price tag went from $24,000 to $12,000. Thanks Penn! The reason I recommend Penn the most is because it has a higher acceptance rate than Brown, higher chances of being able to compare financial aid packages. About 10% compared to 9%.

Does appealing based on another award work at Brown?

The financial aid site encourages us to do so, but does it actually work? Johns Hopkins is giving me $4000 more in need-based aid than Brown is (a very large amount for my family) and I would really like to go to Brown...I'm submitting JHU's award letter tomorrow when I get home, but does anyone know what my chances of actually getting more money are?

Brown is definitely my top choice, so I will apply early decision there if it helps my chances. - 35 ACT Composite - SAT Subject Tests: 800 Math II, taking Physics and US History this summer - 3.97 unweighted GPA (school doesn't weight), 8 AP classes from 9th-11th grade - all 5s on my 4 AP tests from 9th and 10th grade - Robotics (definitely my most significant EC): involved since 3rd grade Lego robotics, on varsity team since 10th grade, 4 leadership positions including captain next year, will also be lettering this year - Student writing tutor: will probably be head tutor next year - ACT tutoring: student-run nonprofit, some sort of leadership next year - Band: Marching/pep band during football/basketball season since 10th grade, 2 "Superior" ratings in state solo/ensemble contest (10th and 11th grade), varsity letter - City leadership award for my volunteering through robotics (coaching elementary Lego teams, running Lego summer camps) I'm also Hispanic if that helps. Thanks!

I posted this in the Michigan forum too, just need help deciding between the 2 schools. I was accepted to both Brown and UofM as a Ross Pre-Admit, and I am looking to go into finance/wall street jobs after graduation (probably investment banking). There are definitely pros and cons to both schools but I'm really having a tough time deciding between the two, as I love both schools a lot and I'm sure I'd be happy at both. I am OOS at Michigan and cost is not much of a factor in the decision. Any advice??

Vandy or Brown? Stressing over decisions, please help :)

Hi Everyone! I am a current high school senior who is deciding between 2 colleges with just a little more than a week left to decide, so any quick answers would be much appreciated! I have been accepted by Vanderbilt University as a Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholar, which means tuition is covered, I receive a 6K stipend for research/studying abroad, around 2K as a National Merit Finalist, and automatic admission into the Honors College. I have also been accepted by Brown University, who gave me around 10K. Currently, I am torn between these two options. I am thinking about going pre-med (majoring in Chem/Bio/or Neuro) and going off to medical school in the future, so I am aware of the massive amount of costs in the future. However, I love just about everything about Brown, and I feel that its Open Curriculum is much more suited for me and my career goals. I want to double major in Applied Math/Econ so I have something to fall back on, which is much more achievable at Brown. The only reason why I am considering Vandy at this point is money. Brown's acceptance rate to med school is consistently 85-90%, while Vanderbilt's is around 66-70%. I am completely torn. Anyone have any advice? Thank you so much

Brown vs. JHU

Hello! I first want to start off by saying thanks for taking the time to read this post. So now that I've heard back from all my schools in terms of where I've been accepted, it's finally time for me to make a decision on where I want to go. I've been accepted to 9 schools and I've narrowed it down to two: Johns Hopkins and Brown. I really like the fact that both of these schools have a pretty open curriculum, which is a good asset considering I hope to double major. In terms of cost, both of them are almost the same (literally there is only a couple of hundred dollars separating them). I live in Virginia, so Maryland is really close compared to Rhode Island, but I don't mind being that far away from home. But of course, the most important thing is academics. I definitely plan on majoring in Neuroscience, and hopefully double majoring with Public Health as well, and I also plan to go on a pre-med track. I know that Johns Hopkins has a great science program in general and lots of research. But, I'm a little concerned about the environment. I know that the whole "Hopkins is really competitive" stereotype might be overplayed, but it's hard to not keep that in your mind. On the other hand, Brown is said to be more "laid back," but I'm wondering how much of that is a stereotype too, considering that it's pretty selective in the first place. Anyways, I'm not even sure if I'm making any coherent sense, but I would love to hear anyone's thoughts on the issue. Thanks again!

I'm curious about what you can do besides academics at Brown University. Are there any clubs that you can join with no prior experience and how much free time should you leave for yourself to do homework and relax?

Current Brown students: How are you enjoying your time at Brown?

Current Brown students (or Brown parents), how are you enjoying your time at Brown? Any misconceptions? Anything you wish you would have known? Were there colleges you chose Brown over and why was that? Any advice specific to life at Brown? I have tried to find similar threads as these but they seem a little outdated. I would greatly appreciate anything that can be contributed to the conversation.

Brown vs. UPenn vs. Wellesley

I never thought I would be in this situation, but here I am. Up until Ivy day I thought I was going to Wellesley. I didn't think I had a big shot at any of the Ivies I applied to, but I ended up getting into both UPenn and Brown. I plan on visiting all three again (Wellesley COC, Brown ADOCH), but I was wondering what others think about this situation. How different would my experience be at Brown or Penn vs. a small top LAC like Wellesley? Career wise, how would any/all of these schools help to propel me forward? I am interested in Middle Eastern Studies, Arabic, IR etc. I am also very interested in Politics. My prospective majors at the three colleges are as follows: UPenn: Modern Middle Eastern Studies or PPE (Politics Philosophy and Economics) Wellesley: IR w/ Poly Sci or Econ (possibly might try my hand at Comp Sci as well) Brown: IR (fantastic program with focus on Security & Society or Political Economy & Society), Development Studies

Early Decision

"Please do not assume that your admission chances are improved by applying under the Early Decision plan. The Board of Admission makes the same decisions under Early Decision that it would under the Regular Decision plan." I was considering applying early decision for the sole purpose of finding out earlier and having an increased chance. But this says that my chances are not increased. Is this false?

Engineering at Michigan vs Brown vs USC vs Duke

My son was accepted to Michigan, Brown and USC and waitlisted at Duke for engineering. He is currently interested biomedical or mechanical engineering. He also enjoys writing, music and Spanish. We live on the West Coast and he prefers warmer weather but that won't be the deciding factor. Would be paying about the same for each school. Would be grateful for any thoughts.

Brown vs Yale for Classics Major

Hi guys, I was somehow lucky enough to be admitted to both Brown and Yale, and now I need to make a decision. I plan on majoring in Classics (Latin and Greek), so for anyone familiar with either department, which could you recommend for undergraduate study and why? My other question is about prestige; I know it is somewhat pretentious and superficial, but it is honestly a concern of mine, so I'd appreciate if you'd answer truthfully. Okay so I know Yale has a slight edge, but what I'm wondering, how significant is this disparity in prestige? I know when you tell people you go to Yale, their reaction will indicate how impressed they are. Do you also get his for Brown? to an equal or to a lesser extent? Will people respect my going to Brown as much as they would to Yale? Some of you may be inclined to answer about personal fit; while Brown has the definite edge, and I think I'd be happier there, I'd prefer if you'd answer just these two questions above. Thanks!

Rescind Admission

Hello! I was accepted to Brown and I committed. I am an international student so I sent in my IB predicted scores. I was predicted a 42 which I think may have helped me in admissions but is ridiculously high and now I'm not sure I can get this score. If I get much lowe than this do you think they could rescind my acceptance? What do you think of like a 35? Would they take my place away? Thanks a lot really stressing!

Ease of finding research at Brown?

I plan to concentrate in neuroscience and linguistics, with some focus on cognitive neuroscience as well as neurobiology. My question is, how difficult is it to find research opportunities in these fields? I've heard it's relatively easy to find research in linguistics, fairly difficult to find research to find research in cognitive neuroscience, and somewhat easy to find research in the more wet lab side of neuroscience--how accurate do you guys think this is? I'm between Brown and JHU at the moment, and I know the research opportunities at Brown won't quite match up with those at Hopkins, but I really did like the atmosphere, location, student body, and curriculum much more at Brown...my only concern right now before I decide is research opportunities, which could be a make-or-break for me.

Transferring to Brown from Colby- do I have a chance?

I am considering transferring from Colby College after my freshman year. This year at Colby I had a 3.73 and made the Dean's List. I have no sense of how much high school grades and extracurriculars matter if at all, but In high school I had around a 3.5 unweighted GPA with a 4.18 weighted GPA. My SAT scores were 690 math, 760 reading, 780 writing, and I got two 4s and one 5 on AP exams. I was a lot more involved in extracurriculars in high school than I was at Colby (in high school I did Model UN, a cappella, honors wind ensemble, lacrosse, cross-country skiing, and fall plays- at Colby I was in a cappella, Enviro Co [environmental club], weekly mentoring with a local elementary schooler [Colby Cares About Kids Club], and I was a member of the Freshman Class Council). I am taking this upcoming year off and doing an internship at the Center for Food Safety in Washington, D.C. I am hoping to major in English and potentially minor in Environmental Science. I am looking to transfer to a bigger school (medium sized, anywhere from around 3,000 to 10,000) with more opportunities to get involved in the arts, more clubs, etc. I am thinking about Villanova University, Boston College, Tufts University, and potentially Brown as a big reach (I just don't really have a sense of what it takes to get in as a transfer--I have friends that transferred to Brown that couldn't have gotten in before transferring but I don't know if this is the rule or the exception). Does anyone know how hard it is to get into Brown as a transfer and if I might have a chance? Please advise!

LGBTQ community at Brown?

I committed officially yesterday! I did get to visit the QRC while I was at ADOCH and talk to a lot of people, but I wanted to hear from some people who aren't directly involved in it—I know Brown is very accepting, but how visible do you think the LGBTQ presence on campus? What are dating prospects like for girls who aren't straight? Anything else of note?
