Brown Supplement - Where have you lived?
I've been working on supplemental essays for colleges and I just finished Brown's 100 word essay of, "Tell us where you have lived – and for how long – since you were born; whether you’ve always lived in the same place, or perhaps in a variety of places."
Would anyone be willing to look over it and give me suggestions if I PM'd it to you? Thank you!

How competitive/popular is the major Business, Entrepreneurship & Organizations?
Can't decide what to put as intended major on the Common App. I'm debating between:
- Business, Entrepreneurship & Organizations
- Comparative Literature
- Mathematics
- Urban Studies
I'd love to do all of them! I really can't decide. Do a lot of people list Business as their intended major? How competitive is it and what kind of qualifications would you need (like straight As, your own business, etc.)?

Should I apply ED to Brown?
Hello. Brown is definitely my first choice school, but I would rather apply ED elsewhere if my record seems inadequate. Any and all advice is appreciated!
I'm Asian American (Filipino), my AP scores are good (nine passed, six 5's - HG, WH, Psych, Euro, USH, Cap Sem - National AP Scholar), my Subject Tests are fine (770 Lit and 760 for U.S.), and my UW = 3.81 // W = 4.86. I studied abroad on a fully-funded govt. scholarship for two months in China, pres. of my school's Chinese Club, founded my school's Feminist Club, interned at a NPO, and volunteered in my local hospital's ER, among other activities. I was a finalist for a national award for Children's Stories and have won state/local awards for writing.
However, I have no hooks (unless you count my dad being a disabled military vet. who's been unemployed for eight years, I suppose) and my ACT scores are funky (36 R, 35 E, 24 M, 24 S = 30 avg.). Further, while I've gotten A's in most of my classes, I've gotten a B in every single math class I've ever taken.
My first choice is Brown and I would love to apply ED (majoring in Cog. Sci.), but would reconsider if it seems like a crapshoot. I am thinking about applying to Swarthmore, Vassar, or Wesleyan ED instead. (Side note: I am convinced that I must apply ED to one of my reach/preferred schools because of my ACT score.) Other schools on my list are Reed, Berkeley, Barnard, Bryn Mawr, and Wellesley. I just want to go to a more-or-less prestigious school with quirky, intelligent students in a non-cutthroat environment, preferably in or close to a city.
Please reply whether you would advise me to apply ED or not, and if not, then recommend similar schools / a different course of action, if you can. Thanks in advance for the help.

Stressed junior looking for advice on how to get into brown
Brown is an amazing premed school and it is my dream school so I am looking for any advice on how to improve my stats/ecs to maximize my chances of getting in:
I'm at a junior top high school in California
GP A- 4.0 uv, 4.6 weighted,
Sophomore year course load: Ap calculus AB/ BC(5 on both) Ap Computer science, AP Chemistry(4), AP World History(5)
Junior Year Courses: AP Biology, AP Physics 1, AP US History, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, AP English Language
SAT: Old sat 2290- retaking, PSAT 1480 (750 m 730 r/w)
ECS: President of multiple clubs including- girls who code, bone marrow drive, research club, started a nonprofit to help cancer patients, got funding to start a middle school STEM outreach/teaching STEM to girls with autism,etc..
Research: Internships in biomedical research from freshman year, paid research internship this year as part of a rigorous life sciences program, publishing clinical research
Assist with a healing arts workshop for cancer patients-hope to write about in essay
Any advice? I would absolutely love to be accepted to PLME but that is so insanely competitive, I would love Brown as an undergraduate school as well- Any alumni advice on how to improve ECs/chances would be extremely helpful. I am very stressed out about college right now and any guidance/direction would be appreciated.

Brown with a 32 ACT
I have a 32 ACT (34E 30M 31R 34S 30W) and took it again today. I probably scored around a 32 again. The rest of my app is strong. I'm applying ED and I was wondering if this 32 will hurt my chances of being admitted. It's the average score for Brown, right?

Should I apply ED??
Brown is my absolute dream school, and I know that it is exactly where I would like to be next year. I did some research and read that the acceptance rate for ED is about 16-ish%, not including recruited athletes. I know Brown is a reach, but should I wait until RD? I kind of figured that it's better to apply ED that way if I get rejected, I can move on and focus on other things. I also felt like I'm part of a smaller applicant pool, and it shows how committed I am to Brown.I'm also applying to PLME which is THE biggest long shot on the face of the earth, I know. I took this info model from another post on the Brown threads, but here's a little about me:
•SAT I: 1400 (700 reading/690 Math)
• ACT: Just took in September, but am expecting a 32-34
•GPA: 4.0 weighted (School doesn't do unweighted GPA), this is my biggest concern. I am actually a very smart person but struggle a little in school and I'm afraid my transcript is going to ruin my chances.
•AP: World History(3), English Lang(4), US History(4), Psych(4)- my school doesn't offer a lot of APs, and the guidance is really bad at placing students in classes.

•Extracurriculars: Cheerleading team (4 years, captain), Stunt (2 years, captain), JSA (2 years), Habitat for Humanity, SING (Student run musical competition) (3 years, lead, head writer), Pre-med club (4 years, secretary),
•Volunteer/Community Service: Volunteer at local historic village since 2012, volunteer at local hospital, raise money through walks (ex. March of Dimes, Autism walk)
•Summer Activities: I usually have to work during the summer but this summer I went to Brown for a summer program (Intro To Medicine), which is how I started to become so in love with the school. Other than that, I spend all of my HS summers working.

•State (if domestic applicant): NY
•Country (if international applicant): USA

Chances for Brown?
I am a rising senior attending a medium sized public school in New England. My family is from Sweden so I am bilingual and have dual citizenship. My top choice is Brown and I am wondering if I have a chance of getting in?
My high school doesn't calculate class rank but I have had all A's (except one B+ freshman year) and junior year had an average of 97. I would assume that I'm in the top 10% of my class based on what I hear from classmates.
I am a national merit scholar semi-finalist and got a 34 on my ACT. I haven't taken the subject tests and I'm not sure if I will, since they aren't required with the ACT.
As for classes, here is what I have taken/will take: (my school doesn't allow freshman or sophomores to take AP classes)
Freshman year: honors geometry, honors biology, honors English, honors civics, Spanish 2, band, gym
Sophomore year: honors algebra 2, honors chemistry, honors history, honors sophomore English, band, Spanish 4
Junior year: AP US History (got a 5), honors physics, honors literature, honors pre calculus, Spanish 5. I also took college level Anatomy and Physiology and Human Growth and Development classes through my school's technical center, for which I received 7 college credits. These classes took up two class blocks every day, so they limited my ability to take more AP classes
Senior year: I will be taking AP biology, AP government, AP calculus, AP Spanish, AP literature, and a mandatory senior seminar class
Extracurriculars:
-I've been on the Nordic ski team since freshman year (two years JV, two years varsity)
-Varsity tennis since freshman year, though I was injured junior year and was unable to play
-Model United Nations since sophomore year. This year I will be one of the (two) leaders and will organize and chair two conferences at my school
-I became a member of my school's environmental club (which only has five members) my junior year and will be a leader of the club my senior year. With the club, I organized a school-wide "earth day extravaganza" event and am working on campaigns to raise awareness about recycling and composting and we are trying to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles form our vending machines.
-I interned at City Hall my junior year, where I lead a project against idling. I brought a local anti-idling organization to present to the driver's education class, which will become a yearly event. I also worked with the city to get them to put up official anti-idling signs around the school's parking lot. I hosted a press conference with the superintendent and school principle to commemorate these new signs.
-For the last two years, I have helped lead a children's running club at a local elementary school.
-I have taught piano lessons to neighborhood kids for the past three years. I have had six students overall and all have become at least proficient in piano.
-I did theater for ten years, including freshman and sophomore year but had a bad experience with my school's drama club and also realized that I was more interested in pursuing other interests
-this summer, I have been a lab assistant in a neuroscience lab at a local university. We have been testing mice to see how a certain gene plays a role in generalization of fear.
-I also work at American Eagle as a sales associate
-I am an avid runner and have run three half marathons and will be running my fourth this fall
-I am a member of NHS and will be an Advisory Mentor for freshman this year
-My team and I were the state champions of our state's Brain Bee, which is neuroscience competition for high schoolers
-I was a member of the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council sophomore year and might do it again my senior year
-I also do various volunteer work around my town
I am planning on double majoring in neuroscience and political science. The other schools I'm looking at include Dartmouth (where my dad went and now teaches at), Yale, Amherst, Tufts, Colombia, and Vassar.
I know getting into Brown is not easy but I'm just wondering others on here think.
Thanks!

Should I ED to Brown?/ED v. RD to Brown
So Brown has a notably higher acceptance rate for ED, but I'm also aware of the huge debate regarding whether or not that's actually reflective of more people getting in or whether it's reflective of a much more qualified applicant pool/athletes and legacies/etc. Brown is one of the schools I really like/even love, however, just as who I am I would really prefer to have the ability in choosing my school, because I haven't had the chance to hardcore visit and tour a lot of the schools I'm applying to and also I'm indecisive in much of what I do and would really like to be able to go to freshman admit weekends to get a better feel for everything. In the end though, Brown seems like such an awesome school and if they were REA I would 100% REA there, but I'm hesitating to ED because on one hand, I don't want to not ED and therefore lose my shot at getting into Brown, but on the other hand, I don't want to ED and then realize that I've changed my mind about which college I want to go to come December 15th. So if I have a similar shot in RD to Brown as my shot in ED, then I think I would be more comfortable going the RD route, but if my chances are drastically different then I'm more inclined to ED.

How will Brown look at my test scores?
So I know that Brown doesn't exactly super score the ACT, but I know that they consider the highest subsections if you submit multiple test scores. I have a 32 for highest composite but I have a 34 super score now. So, since I'm sending two tests to Brown and they will only consider the highest sub sections when I apply, will it be more of a 34 or 32 or both? (If you get what I'm saying)

Music Submission/Supplement
Hello,
Music is my main extracurricular and I do a lot of it through school and a ton of programs outside of school. However, I'm applying for a humanities major. So I thought I'd do a music submission!
I have a few recordings of my playing to send in, including one movement of a Mozart french horn concerto (accompanied by piano), a modern unaccompanied solo, and part of a Romantic composition (with piano). Brown says its limit is 15 minutes, and each of these recordings is about 4 minutes, adding up to 11 mins. They're audio recordings and I don't think I sound too bad in them. But they're not flawless. In each one I make several mistakes (several fingering mistakes and a few missed high notes) that the music department/admissions office will definitely be able to hear.
Has anyone done this in the past? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should send in, if I should at all?
Thanks!

Chemistry 0360 (Organic II) at Brown
Hi,
I will be attending Brown starting this fall. Chemistry has always been my strength and I would like to concentrate in chem as well. Is it possible, by request, for me to take a placement best to place out of organic chemistry I (chem 0350) and take Organic II in this upcoming fall? I have thorough knowledge for the Organic I portion because of my preparation for the chemistry olympiad.
Thank you in advance!

Invite-only Computer Science Day at Brown
Hi everyone, Brown ED applicant here. Majoring -- ahem, concentrating -- in computer science. I went to a Brown visit, and sent in my Common App, and a few days ago, I got an email from the Brown CS department.
Greetings from Computer Science at Brown!
Please join us on (redacted event date) for a special day hosted by the Department of Computer Science. We are proud of our department - which ranks among the top Computer Science departments at colleges and universities nationwide - and would like you to experience what we have to offer. We have put together a program at which:
You’ll hear from current Brown students about life in the Computer Science Department: the courses you’d take, being an undergraduate teaching assistant, and working with faculty and other students on research projects.
Of course, I accepted as soon as I could. On the official event registration website, which now 404s if you try to visit the page, it was said that only 60 students could be accommodated. It seems like lunch will be provided. (Disclaimer: I want to respect the Brown CS dept.'s privacy, so I've redacted the names of professors who'll be speaking at the event and the exact event date.)
My main question for CC is: is this a good thing? Is everyone invited to these kinds of events, or does Brown think I'm special? I'm so honored to be invited, but should I be? Should I pick my hopes for admission up a tiny bit? Is this exclusive?
Brown officials, if you see this: I've read everything I could on this event, and I don't see anywhere that this is confidential. If I shouldn't have posted this, then I'll report it so a mod can take it down ASAP. Love you, Brown.
