I have a 35 ACT, 780 sat II in math and a 730 in Spanish. I have a stellar essay and very strong supplements. I've taken the most rigorous classes across the board at a highly academic NYC prep school. Is this impossible? Would this be a waste of my ED?

For this question- Some applicants maintain an online presence that showcases their background, talents, or creativity. If you maintain such a site, please feel free to enter the URL here - should I put my LinkedIn page? Pretty sure they are referring to things like youtube channels, blogs, etc but I have nothing of the sort. I just have a well designed LinkedIn- should I paste it or would it be a waste of time as it doesn't really state anything not on my activities or awards list? Or would it look good if they see the connections/professionalism I have?

Parents Shock at Dorm Condition

I have not posted on here in a very long time, but am now in the hope of gaining some insight from other Brown parents/alumni. Recently visited son at Brown and husband and I were shocked at the neglect/condition of the dorm. We are not fancy people and both attended state colleges, but neither of us ever experienced anything close to this. Dirty walls, carpet, drapes, bathroom missing tiles, peeling paint, completely brown and rusted air vent. Dingy, dark, dirty depressing. Son has never complained and we would have never known had we not visited. Given the caliber of Brown (not to mention cost of housing) we were appalled. We live in a rural community across the country. Union Gospel Mission and Homeless shelters better cared for than this dorm. Son was sick and recovering so broke our hearts to leave him there in this condition. Upon our return home, we received an e-mail from Brown going on and on about the new Performing Arts Center they will be building. I think their priorities are in the wrong place. Freshman dorm great, but every year since has been a downgrade. Friend with HS junior wants to visit son but son embarrassed to show him his dorm. Next year he is a senior and if I could would love to guarantee him a better place to live but know that is not likely with lottery system and all. Any other parents out there with a similar view? Can alumni band together and do something to improve the dorms with the 3.2 billion dollar endowment?

Would it be completely strange to attach either my goodreads (I read a lot of books) or vsco (photography) profile? (in the website form)

Be brutal with me, I can take it. Thank you! Race/Ethnicity: Black Sex: Male Intended Major: Linguistics GPA and Coursework: 3.6 UW, my school doesn't weight GPA or report it to colleges (they just give the transcript). My school is the 8th best private school in Pennsylvania , very competitive. DISCLAIMER: At my school, we aren't allowed to take AP classes until Junior/Senior year. There are 17 APs offered but feasibly you could only take ~9 max (3 Junior Year + 6 Senior year). This is due mainly to overlap in scheduling or subject matter among offered classes. For instance, here you can take AP World OR AP Gov OR AP Art History, AP Calc AB OR AP Calc BC, AP Physics OR AP Physics E&M, AP Spanish OR AP Latin because of prerequisites, etc. With that said, I've taken 5 APs (2 Junior Year, 3 Senior Year): APUSH, AP World, AP Spanish, AP Computer Science, and AP Calculus AB I've also taken 7 of the 10 offered Honors classes: Algebra II, Chemistry, English XII, Geometry, Physics, Pre-Calculus, and Spanish IV My school doesn't report rank, but my guidance counselor says I am in the top bracket for rigor among my class of 105 students. Test Scores: 1500 on the new SAT (770 english, 730 math) 710 on SAT II Spanish 720 on SAT II Math 2 4 on AP Spanish and APUSH Haven't taken the other AP Exams yet Personal Statement: I chose the prompt about challenging an idea or belief. I talked about a time my best friend (1st generation African) and I had a falling out over my decision to learn Swahili. Long story short, by the end of it my views on racial/cultural identity, which were pretty toxic before, were radically changed for the better. Extracurriculars: 1.Leader of our school's selective A Capella group, 9-12 2.Founder/Leader of Linguistics Club, 12 3.Leader of Creative Writing Club 11-12 4.Captain of Varsity Track and Field in senior year, member 9-12 -1st place in Triple Jump at both local and state relays 2 years in a row, our team won the 2017 PAISAA State Championships. 5.Self-taught in Swahili for the past year, took a self-guided online French course from Middlebury College over this past summer 6.Internship as teaching assistant in ESL (English as a Second Language) night classes for immigrant workers in Philadelphia this past summer 7.Lead role in every theatre production since freshman year, for a total of 7 shows, counting senior year. 9-12 8.Senior Member of Performing Arts Council, 11-12 -Oversees miscellaneous performing arts related events throughout the year. As part of my duties, I help host bi-monthly open-mic nights for students to perform for each other, and write/record/star in silly music videos to advertise said events, which are sent out to the entire school. 9.Main Anchor for Weekly Student Newscast, 12 -Totally student run, films on weekends, writes scripts during the week. I'm a writer and one of the two main anchors. We give announcements, interview teachers and students in Student Life segments, cover sports news, etc. 10. Volunteer storybook character at local children's museum, 9-12 -This is one of my personal favorites. I dress up as prince charming/peter pan/shiny knight/pirate and entertain children for like 5 hours at this annual event called the Storybook Ball. It's not the most intense EC but man do I love making the kids smile. Awards: Awarded the Drama Prize in 11th grade for performance as Jesus Christ (Godspell) Awarded the Music Prize in 11th grade for leadership in A Capella group Not really an award, but...I was part of an accelerated Spanish program that only takes 2 students every year. Essentially, I started freshman year in a 10th grade Spanish class, meaning I was a year ahead for the rest of high school. As a result, I sort of ran out of spanish classes to take by Senior Year, which is why I don't have a foreign language on my transcript this year. Recommendations: Spanish teacher who I've had 9th-11th, I came up with the idea for Linguistics club with her over the summer and created it in collaboration with her, so I think it'll be good. My only worry is I slacked off a little in AP Spanish Junior year, ended up getting a B (86.9%) -- she likes me so I know she won't badmouth me, but she'll probably mention it :/ APUSH teacher in 11th grade, wonderful woman, we've had many laughs together and she likes watching me perform. I did really well in her class and never slipped up, so I have faith in this one too.

Likelihood of Portal Crash

I'm planning on applying to my first choice (Brown) ED, but I am somewhat behind on essays, and I would like to have as much time as possible to edit my application before I submit it. I have heard horror stories about portals crashing on the application due date, and I'm wondering what the likelihood of being unable to submit my application if I wait until October 31/November 1. Also if the portal does crash, will applicants be given an extra day?

Shenanigans at Brown?

My kid loves stories of college shenanigans. Gettysburg went from 0 to 60 when he heard about a friend who used to dress as a civil war soldier and use light projectors to convince tourists that they'd seen a ghost. MIT is a lousy fit but he's still thinking about it because of MIT's legendary pranking culture. Brown hit the list when we found out about Professor Carberry and the cracked pot lectures. Sustaining a joke for nearly 90 years is quite the achievement. Looking at the serious side, I think Brown would be a good match but my sales pitch needs more ammunition. So, what stories can you tell about student pranks or shenanigans that haven't made it to the college website? Tell me something that will appeal to my zany and offbeat kid.

SAT Score Send

I took two SAT subject tests in October, I used my free score send to send those scores along with my regular SAT to Brown. However, I just got my scores back for the subject tests and I did not do well at all. It is really stressing me out because I was sick on the day I took the test and everything else in my application is good including my regular SAT score, but I don't think you're allowed to cancel scores after you send them, even though the college board technically hasn't sent my scores yet. I am so nervous because I'm applying ED. I'm honestly in tears, I wish I took these tests earlier so I can have time to redo them. Is there any way to cancel score send? Should I retake in November and rush my scores? Brown is my dream school I really hate myself right now.

Chance Me at Brown University?

Brown is my dream school, but I am incredibly nervous about my chances of admission. I'm a 2017-2018 QuestBridge Finalist. Here are my stats: Ethnicity: White Gender: F State: FL (I live on an island of about 800 people) School: SOOOO small, public, pre-k-12th with only 260. I have 18 students in my 12th grade class. ACT (Composite, english, math, reading, science, essay): 32, 32, 30, 32, 32, 9/12 (not high, I know) SAT II: Don't know yet - will any day now UW GPA: 4.0/4 W GPA: 4.47/5 Senior Course Load (1st Semester): Intro to Chem (dual enrollment), Discovering the Universe (dual enrollment), General Psychology (dual enrollment), Trigonometry (dual enrollment), high school college prep elective thing called AVID 2nd semester is TBD but I know I am taking Calculus and Economics Junior Courses: College Comp I and II, College Algebra, PreCalc, Physics Honors online, US History Honors online, US Government, Agritechnology III (certified), Business Software Applications (certified in all four) Sophomore Courses: Agritechnology II, Administrative Office Technologies (business), English II Honors, Biology Honors, Spanish II online, AP World History, Algebra II Freshman Courses: Agritechnology I, Computing for College and Career (business), English I Honors, Environmental Science, Spanish I online, HOPE online, Geometry (took Alg I in 8th grade) EC: basketball, Senior Beta, FFA, FBLA, Student Gov Awards: 6 FFA state championships, Florida Sunshine State STEM Scholar, Honor Roll, Subject Awards for every high school class taken in 9th-11th grade I was chosen for the National Society for High School Scholars and as a delegate for the National Future Scientists and Technologists thing but I didn't have enough money to accept and go. I want to put out there that I am taking the most rigorous curriculum offered at MY school, it doesn't even compare to over half of this year's applicants. My school barely offers any classes past the core curriculum, I've taken one of the 2 AP classes it offers, and I am for the majority part full time dual enrollment with a community college 1.5 hours away and online with University of Florida. I am very low income, and I work 22-24 hours a week at a local marina. I am involved in almost every EC offered at the school, disregarding sports. STEM was defunded in 2015, but I was in it during 9th grade. I tutor middle school students during and after school. I have 150 community service hours. I've completed art projects for my town. I know that my teacher recs are 9/10-10/10, so is my counselor one. Small school = great teacher student relationships. One of my teacher recs is from a comp professor I had through dual enrollment, we instantly clicked, she wants this just as much as I do, and has a lot of confidence in me. I am a decent writer, and I am working on the common app essays. I'm honestly just nervous that I won't be considered because my scores are low, and I don't stand out a lot. No one at my school has applied to Brown, or even an Ivy, before. I am applying for the College Match, but I don't have a lot of hope - only about 10% of finalists get it. I am anticipating regular action (that's what we're automatically considered for if we're not matched).

Brown recommends two subject tests for admission. I will be applying to PLME and thus will need to submit a subject test score in science. I'd like to submit SAT Math 2 and SAT Bio. I have an 800 in Math 2 but a sad 740 in Bio. Can I submit my November scores to Brown? How can I get the scores to them faster? Thanks!
